Understanding the coroner’s role.
Our original website described advocacy around non-invasive examinations for families with religious concerns about post-mortems. That history does not establish which scanning services are available today.
A coroner decides whether an examination is needed to establish the cause of death. GOV.UK explains the process, including when the body can be released for a funeral.
Raise religious concerns early.
Tell the coroner’s office and your funeral director about any religious concerns. Ask whether a non-invasive examination could be considered in your circumstances, which services are available and whether there would be costs.
A scan may not be available or sufficient. Confirm the options, likely costs and timing directly with the professionals handling the case.
