We wish to express our deepest condolences to George Floyd’s family and the Black Community globally who will be deeply affected by his death, and the manner in which it occurred.
The murder of George Floyd is yet another reminder of the systems of oppression that exist within society, and the very specific struggle of Black people. While violence is the most visible form of racism, we do not underestimate the devastating and life-limiting impact of structural and institutional manifestations of racism. We recognise that anti-blackness is a unique and particularly ugly form of racism which exists in all communities – including our own Muslim community.
It is therefore pertinent to remind ourselves, as Muslims that Allah, Glorious and Exalted, states:
“O you who have believed, persistently stand firm in justice, as witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.” [Qur’an 4:135]
Our message, and intent today is, therefore, clear: We stand united against all racial prejudice and injustice. This is our call to action. This is our call to unity, equality and solidarity.
Prophet Muhammed, may peace and blessings be upon him said:
“… a white person has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over white except by piety and good action.”
We endeavour to refocus our efforts in ensuring that we live these important aspects of our faith well, and in accordance to divine guidance.
